LA MIRADA, Calif.—Frustration continued under the lights on Monday night for the Hawai`i Hilo men's soccer team during a 3-1 loss to Biola at Al Barbour Field.
The Vulcans fell to the Eagles, despite a game effort that saw them play most of the first half on the Biola end of the field, outshooting the home team, 12-8. But when it was all said and done, the Vulcans are still winless in 2017 at 0-11 overall and 0-8 in the Pacific West Conference.
Biola, in its first year in the PacWest, improved to 5-3 in league play and is now even on the season at 6-6-1.
Hungry for a win, the Vulcans came out aggressive and took a number of long shots early. They couldn't get any into the back of the net, and their only mistake was on the defensive end, a hand ball, gave Biola a penalty kick in the 35
th minute that was converted by Kousei Mattox against starting goalkeeper
Cassidy Dixon. That 1-0 Biola lead held through the halftime break.
The Eagles became the aggressor in the second half. They took more shots and one of them found the net in the 66
th minute when Jarrett Pugh scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. That 2-0 margin looked insurmountable with the way things have gone of late for the Vulcans.
But has also been the case all year, this feisty Vulcan team didn't cash it in. They kept coming and finally found the net for the first time in three matches in the 73
rd minute.
Jonathan Garcia scored his first goal of the season, taking a pass from
Jesus Ortega and depositing it into the left side of the goal from 18 yards out to pull the Vulcans to within one score. It was Ortega's second assist of the year.
The Eagles quickly closed the door though, snuffing out any UH Hilo hopes. Jack Cybulski added an insurance goal in the 87
th minute.
After 90 minutes the shot totals were fairly even. Both teams had six shots on goal, while Biola had 23 attempts and UH Hilo 21.
The Vulcans will wrap up this southwest road trip with a Thursday match in St. George, Utah against Dixie State.
