Porta scores twice to defeat Vulcans, 2-0

ST. GEORGE, Utah—Dixie State's Jandir Porta scored twice to lead his team to a 2-0 win over visiting Hawaii Hilo on Thursday night under the lights at Legend Solar Stadium.

Porta scored his fourth and fifth goals of the season in the 19th and 81st minutes to give the Trailblazers their third straight victory. They improved to 10-2 on the year and to 6-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Hawaii Hilo dropped to 0-9 in conference action and to 0-12 on the season.

Porta, a sophomore, got his team on the board at 18:36 off a corner kick. The kick came to the center of the box, where a header attempt came back to Porta, who pushed it in past Vulcan goalkeeper Nick Williams.

The score stayed 1-0 at the break.

The Vulcans played the Trailblazers close-to-even in the stat column late into the contest. But Porta added the clinching insurance goal at 80:14 from 17 yards out.

Dixie State had 17 shots in the game to UH Hilo's 13. The Trailblazers had six shots on goal compared to UHH's four. Jonathan Garcia had five of UH Hilo's shots. Williams had three saves for the visitors.

The Vulcans will return home to play their final four matches of the season, beginning with a Tuesday, October 24 match against Notre Dame de Namur.
