KEAAU, Hawai`i—Notre Dame de Namur used a pretty first half goal from Ellie Mujushi stand up for a 1-0 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Tuesday night at Paiea Stadium.
Notre Dame de Namur moved above .500 in Pacific West Conference play with the win, improving to 5-4-2. They are now 8-6-2 overall. The Vulcans dropped their fourth straight match to fall to 3-6-1 in conference play and to 6-7-1 overall, under .500 for the first time this season.
Mujushi scored her 11
th goal of the season in the 30
th minute on a nifty bit of footwork. From about 30 yards out, she juked a UHH defender and dribbled past another, drawing Vulcan goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford out of the goal. The 6-foot freshman then flicked into the top right corner of the net to give the Argonauts a 1-0 lead, which would hold into halftime.
The Vulcans had three shots on goal in the first half, all saved by NDNU keeper Abigail Cebrero, including a free kick by
Astrid Perez just six minutes into the game that Cebrero made a leaping save of.
UH Hilo kept the pressure on early in the second half, firing five shots in the first ten minutes of play, including two that had to be saved. But their opportunities dwindled after that as the Argonauts tightened up their defense.
UHH's best final opportunity came with just under ten minutes to play when
Bryana-Marie Ebbers fired a bullet from 20 yards out that Cebrero made a diving save of. Two other shots just missed.
In the final tally, UH Hilo had almost twice as many shots (11\6) and three times as many shots on goal (6\2).
In the midst of four final home matches, UH Hilo will host Dominican on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
