Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sunbirds stun Vulcans with two late goals

HILO, Hawai`i—Visiting Fresno Pacific scored twice in the final 11 minutes, including the game winner with one minute left to stun Hawaii Hilo in women's soccer action at Paiea Stadium on Monday night, 2-1.

The Hawaii Hilo women's soccer team was just moments away from a major upset before Fresno Pacific flipped the script, keeping the Sunbird's Pacific West Conference title hopes alive. FPU improved to 9-2 in conference play with the win (9-6-1 overall) and moved into second place in the PacWest.

The heart wrenching loss for the Vulcans pushed their losing streak to six matches.  They are now 6-9-1 overall and 3-8-1 in conference action.

The win was the seventh straight for Fresno Pacific. Included in that string are wins over Azusa Pacific, whom the Sunbirds just leapfrogged in the standings, and first-place California Baptist.

For the first 79 minutes of the match, it looked like the Vulcans were on their way to a major upset.

With just one minute and two seconds left in the first half, the Vulcans surprised the Sunbirds with an improbable goal. Leighana Weaver and Clarissa Guerrero, who had just re-entered the match literally two minutes earlier, combined on a nifty exchange. From the left side, Guerrero touched a pass to Weaver who dribbled past a defender, bringing the FPU keeper out of the goal. Weaver deposited the ball into the right corner of the net past Summer Hammond.

It was Weaver's first goal of the season and Guerrero's first assist.

Both teams upped the ante on offensive in the second half.  Hammond and UH Hilo goalkeeper Jenna Hufford made key saves as neither team found scoring paydirt again until a handball called on the Vulcans with 11 minutes left sent Mariah Montoya to penalty kick territory. Hufford dove right and Montoya's kick went into the left corner of the net to tie the match at 1-1.

Looking like overtime was inevitable, everything changed with literally 1:02 left on the clock. FPU's Rachel Anderson sent a pass into a pile of players in front of the Vulcan goal to Snow, whose shot was blocked but came right back to her. She re-gathered the ball and fired it into the net, sending the Sunbirds running in celebration.

It was UHH's sixth loss by one goal this season.

The Vulcans will wrap up the 2017 season this coming Saturday (Nov. 4) at home against Chaminade at 12:30 p.m. UH Hilo's six seniors will be honored in a presentation at the conclusion of the contest.
