MSOC Weekly: Season Finale is Saturday vs. Silverswords

THIS WEEK
Saturday, Nov. 4, UH Hilo (1-14/1-11 PWC) vs. Chaminade (3-8-2/2-7-2 PWC), Paiea Stadium, Kamehameha School Hawai`i, 3 pm
(Link to Live Stats for all matches available at www.hiloathletics.com)

Hilo Headlines: The Vulcans had their best weekend of the season, taking down Dominican 3-0 and nearly topping Fresno Pacific (3-2) in an inspired effort. UH Hilo will now put a wrap on the 2017 season on Saturday with a rivalry, Senior Day match against Chaminade.

Scoring Barrage: After scoring just six goals in their first 15 matches, the Vulcans went on a scoring binge in the matches against the Penguins and Sunbirds. Against Dominican, UH Hilo scored all three goals in a 12-minute span, and versus Fresno Pacific they deposited two goals twice in 11:30.

Ode to Ortega: Sophomore Jesus Ortega scored twice against Dominican, his first two goals of the season. He opened the scoring in the 24th minute and added another at 36 minutes. For good measure he provided the assist on Bryan Reynoso's goal in the 31st minute. He was named the Hawaii Tribune-Herald Athlete of the Week for his work.

Dateline Dixon: Senior goalkeeper Cassidy Dixon, making just his second start this year, was terrific during the 3-0 win over Dominican. The Pahoa product had seven saves and a number of other solid defensive plays in posting his first shutout since the 2015 season. Dixon was named the Pacific West Conference Defender of the Week for his efforts.

Breaking the Skid: With the win over Dominican, the Vulcans not only gained their first victory in 14 tries this season, but they snapped a 26-match streak without a win. Their last victory had been in the first weekend of the 2016 season, in overtime over Chaminade.

Silversword Sentences: Chaminade topped the Vulcans 2-1 in overtime in Honolulu back on Sept. 4 this year. They also have wins over Academy of Art and Biola this fall. They play Fresno Pacific on Thursday before making their way to Keauu on Saturday. UH Hilo leads the all-time series between the two squads, 17-4-4.

Scoring Column: Freshman Bryan Reynoso has five of UHH's 11 goals, and sophomore Jonathan Garcia has five of the team's 11 assists. Garcia leads the team in shots with 31, followed by Reynoso's 27.

Senior Salute: Five Vulcan seniors will be honored after Saturday's match with Chaminade—Cassidy Dixon, Joshua Jasper, Evan Bacani, Kyran Johal and Jake Sagami.

The Coach: Gene Okamura is in his second season as the leader of the men's and women's soccer programs at UH Hilo. The former Vulcan player and UH Hilo graduate served three seasons as an assistant prior to getting the director's job, and was also the head coach at Kamehameha School, where his team finished second in the HHSAA State Championships in 2015-16. The local product (Waiakea HS) is the Director of Coaching for Hawaii Big Rush and Haaheo Soccer Clubs.
