Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Vulcans battle big brother before falling, 82-64

HONOLULU, Hawai`i—UH Hilo had some shining moments on the big stage but island big brother Hawai`i had more during an 82-64 Rainbow Warrior victory on Saturday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The game counted on UH Manoa's record, and they improved to 6-2 on the season. The game served as an exhibition for the Vulcans, who remain at 3-4 on the year.

UH Hilo's Trey Ingram led all scorers with 14 points, and he also had five assists and four rebounds. Denyhm Brooke joined him in double figures with ten points, three blocked shots and three boards.

Both teams excelled on the defensive end in the very beginning, or both squads were ice cold on offense—probably a little of both. The Hawai`i teams combined to miss the first 14 shots of the game. The first basket didn't come until 4:20 has burned off the clock, when Shefiff Drammeh drained a three-pointer.

The Vulcans missed their first ten shots before Ingram nailed a trey with 13 minutes to go in the half. Still, UH Hilo only trailed by two points with 10:20 on the clock after another Ingram basket (11-9), and had a chance to tie the game one possession later.  A missed Vulcan shot led to a 16-2 Rainbow Warrior run and eventually a 38-19 Hawai`i Manoa halftime lead.

Both teams amped things up offensively in the second half. The Vulcans went on a 7-0 run early after the break, but Hawaii really got rolling, especially from beyond the arch. They finished with ten treys and would lead by as many as 30 points with just ten minutes remaining.

But UH Hilo didn't fold and actually outscored the Rainbow Warriors over the final portion of the second half. All 12 players in uniform got into the game and 11 of those Vulcans scored. UHH warmed up to 41 percent from the field and hit 9-of-23 three-point attempts for the game.

Randan Berinobis led the Vulcans with six rebounds but bigger Hawaii Manoa out-board the Vulcans, 41-29. Mike Thomas led the Rainbow Warriors with 13 points and seven rebounds. Drew Buggs also had 13 points and Drammeh finished with 12.

The Vulcans will return to Pacific West Conference action a week from tonight, traveling right back to Oahu to take on Chaminade. They will remain in Honolulu for Sunday and Monday games against Montana State-Billings and Tampa.
