Vulcans get work in with 7-0 win over Alumni

HILO, Hawaii--Nine Hawaii Hilo pitchers combined to toss a nine-inning shutout and Marcus Calamese hit a home run to highlight the offense as the Vulcans beat their Alumni on Saturday afternoon at Wong Stadium, 7-0.

The game served as the first rough draft for the Vulcans, who will play two more exhibition games on Feb. 21 and 22 against Chuo University of Japan. Both games will start at 6 p.m.

The Vulcans scored their first run in the third inning, added two more in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the eighth.

Philadelphia Phillies draft pick Jordan Kurokawa pitched the first inning for the Alumni, allowing one hit and striking out two. David Moody came in to pitch the second inning and held the Vulcans scoreless as well. But in the third UHH got on the board when Dylan Sugimoto walked, stole second base and came home on Edwin Stanberry's single.

UH Hilo put up two more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning after singles by Reese Kato and Phillip Steering set the table for a ground out RBI by Stanberry. Another run scored on the same play via an error to give the Vulcans a 3-0 lead.

Calamese then led off the sixth with a home run over the leftfield fence. A few batters latter Sugimoto rapped a run-scoring single and Steering soon would add a sacrifice fly to make it 6-0. Steering would double and score on Austin Forney's single in the eighth inning to account for the final tally of 7-0.

Nine different Vulcan pitchers toed the rubber, one at the beginning of each inning. They gave up a total of three hits--to Yoshi Tanaka, Tyler Nitahara and Kristopher Kahanu.

Sugimoto had two hits and scored two runs for the Vulcans. Steering did the same, with a double.
