KAILUA KONA, Hawai`i--The Hawaii Hilo men's tennis team picked up victory number one on the season with a 9-0 win over Sonoma State on Friday afternoon at the Holua Tennis Center. 

The Vulcans (1-1) opened the year with a tight loss to BYU-Hawaii on Wednesday (6-3) in Kona, but bounced back to defeat their west region opponent in straight sets. The Seawolves, who also lost to the Seasiders on Thursday (8-1), are now 0-2 in 2017.

Vaclav Slezak improved to 2-0 on the young season on court one with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Max Nudell. Slezak is a sophomore transfer from Division I Troy University and a native of the Czech Republic. He teammed with doubles partner Gregory Zukeran to also win at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.

Fellow transfer Bruno Figlia is now 2-0 in singles and doubles after winning on court four against Mitchel Heckmann (6-0, 6-1) and at third doubles with Dillon Lam (8-3). 

The Vulcans will get a revenge match-up with BYU-Hawaii tomorrow (Saturday) at the Holua Tennis Center at 11 a.m. They will then play UC San Diego on Sunday (2 pm) and Hawaii Pacific on Monday (noon) before returning to Hilo.
