KAILUA KONA, Hawai`i--The two closest matches of the day went to UC San Diego, and thus the match in a tight men's tennis encounter on Sunday afternoon at the Holua Tennis Center.

The Tritons took the match, 6-3, winning two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches. The Vulcans dropped to 1-3 on the year, while the Tritons moved to 4-3. Two of those three losses for UCSD were against Division I teams. They also defeated No. 5 nationally ranked Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in Kona (5-4).

UHH No. 1 singles player Vaclav Slezak continued his hot start to the season, improving to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Eric Tseng. At No. 6 singles, Ryuta Ogawa won his third straight match in a three-set battle over Sreeganesh Manoharan, 5-7, 6-3, 10-3. The Vulcans also picked up a win at No. 1 doubles with Slezak and Gregory Zukeran taking care of matters in quick time, 8-3.

UH Hilo lost three other singles matches in straight sets, but Alex Fillat Perez lost a heartbreaker at No. 4 singles to Justin Zhang, 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 in a match that could have gone either way. Ditto for the No. 2 doubles match between Fillat Perez and Bruno Figlia against Manoharan and Edvin Larson, which the Vulcan pair fell just short, 9-7.

The Vulcans will wrap up the five-match stand in Kona on Monday against Hawai`i Pacific.
