KAILUA KONA, Hawai`i--UH Hilo newcomer
Alex Fillat Perez picked up wins in singles and doubles but No. 1 Hawai`i Pacific won the overall battle on Monday in men's tennis action at the Holua Tennis Center, 7-2.
Playing in just his third match, the East Central University transfer (Oklahoma) won at No. 3 singles over Jakub Hadrava, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 10-7. Earlier, he teamed with
Bruno Figlia to defeat Torbon Otto and Jack Lyttle at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.
The rest of the courts belonged to the Sharks, the defending NCAA Division II national champions. HPU was playing in part to remove the sting of a 5-4 upset loss to UC San Diego the day previous. They are now 2-1 on the season, while the Vulcans are 1-4.
UHH No 1 singles player Vaclav Slezak lost his first match of the season (4-1) to HPU's Filip Dolezel, a fellow native of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-4.Â
The Vulcans will now have some time back on the practice courts before returning to action with a series of matches in Honolulu March 8-10.
