Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Short-handed Vulcans fall to Urban Knights, 74-67

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.— With just seven players in uniform, the University of Hawaii Hilo men's basketball team came up seven points short during a 74-67 loss to Academy of Art on Thursday night at City College of San Francisco.

The Vulcans played without starting point guard and third leading scorer Ryley Callaghan, who was injured at the end of Tuesday's game at Holy Names. His status for Saturday is questionable. The loss dropped UH Hilo's record to 9-16 on the season and to 7-12 in the Pacific West Conference. The Urban Knights improved to 7-18 on the year and to 6-13 in league play.

UHH couldn't find their offensive stride in the second half. They shot just 35 percent from the field for the game and converted just 4 of 22 three-point attempts.

The Urban Knights led for entire front end of the first half, by as many as nine points. But UHH flipped the momentum down 21-14, scoring the next four baskets and taking the lead on a Anthony Canencia lay-up with just over five minutes remaining in the half (22-21). They would go on to outscore UAA 25-10 over the last nine minutes of the half, taking a 39-31 lead into the locker room at the break after a Parker Farris three-pointer with :29 left.

It was Farris' first trey of the game, but the rest of his team was shooting well. The Vulcans knocked down 58 percent of their shots in the first half.

But the Vulcans went stone in the second half. After a Brian Ishola basket gave UHH a 42-31 lead 45 seconds after intermission, the Vulcans would only score six points in the next eight minutes. A 13-2 AAU run gave the home team a 45-44 lead with 13:25 remaining. The two teams would exchange baskets for the next five minutes, and after a Eric Wattree three-pointer with 8:47 remaining, UHH trailed by just three points at 56-53.

UH Hilo would then go colder than the water in San Francisco Bay. They would score just eight points in the next eight minutes, digging a hole too deep to crawl out of. They would not score a field goal in the final four minutes of the game.

Ishola led the Vulcans with 17 points and nine rebounds. Farris finished with 14 points and had his coldest shooting night of the season, just two days after striking for a career-high 39 points at Holy Names. The senior guard hit only 2-of-16 shots, including 1-of-13 trey attempts. He did convert 10-of-12 free throw attempts.

Randan Berinobis had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Arnold Silva added 11 points and six rebounds.

The Vulcans held a 40-27 rebound edge over their hosts, but they also gave the ball back 18 times via turnovers. Five different Urban Knight players scored in double figures.

The Vulcans will wrap-up the 2016-17 season on Saturday at Dominican. Start time is 7:30 p.m. PST.
