LAS VEGAS, Nev.—For much of the 2016 season and already in the first three games of 2017, Hawai`i Hilo fans were used to the offensive fireworks of
Bailey Gaspar and
Cristina Menjivar providing a major part of the teams' offense in each game.
Those two were no slouches during Sunday's 11-3 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Desert Stinger, but it was a new batch of contributors that lit up the scoreboard as the Vulcans improved to 3-1 on the season. With the loss, the Toros dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Brinell Kaleikini,
Danielle Pulido and
Kristen Ishii all blasted home runs on the day. Kaleikini's was a grand slam, Pulido had five RBI, and in addition to that trio,
Leah Gonzales went 3-for-3 and scored three times. Three of those four Vulcans, the exception being Pulido, are freshmen.
"That is one of the things that this tournament does for us, it gives us a chance to see our freshmen," said head coach
Callen Perreira. "So far, I would have to say I am pleased with what I am seeing."
Perreira also saw solid work out of the bullpen from
Cyanne Fernandez, who was making her 2017 debut. The junior right-hander pitched 4.2 innings, gave up just two hits and didn't allow a run.
The Toros, who pounded Pacific West Conference team Concordia 9-4 on Saturday, jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in this game, courtesy of Lyzette Reveles 3-run homer. That held until the third inning when UHH pieced together a rally that culminated in Pulido's three-run double.
The Vulcans added the clincher in the top of the fourth when Ishii led things off with a solo homer and a few base runners later Kaleikini hit her first college round tripper—a grand slam to left-centerfield. Pulido's two-run shot in the sixth gave the Vulcans more runs to celebrate.
UHH had 12 hits in the game, including the three by Gonzalez and two each by
Mari Kawano, Ishii, and Pulido.
The Vulcans will have a short rest time, taking on Cal State San Bernardino at 2:30 Pacific time.
