HONOLULU, Hawai`i--The Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team dropped two of three doubles matches but rallied back to claim five of the six singles bouts to register a 6-3 victory over Holy Names on Friday afternoon at the Ala Moana Regional Tennis Park.
It was the third straight win for the Vulcans as they improved to 4-4 on the season. The Hawks, who defeated No. 22 nationally ranked Point Loma last month, fell back to 3-3 on the year.
The tandem of
Bruno Figlia and
Alex Fillat Perez picked up UHH's only win in doubles, taking down Holy Names' Javier Luque and Johan Tahilan, 8-4 at No. 2.. The Hawks won the other two doubles matches, and both of them could have gone either way. UHH'sÂ
Vaclav Slezak and
Gregory Zukeran fell to Bernardo Moraes and Matthew Halligan, 8-6 on court one, and
Daniel Tada and
Stefan Coney suffered an even more heartbreaking fate, edged in extra time by Hugo Colpart and Ivan Parra, 9-7 (7-2).
That left it up to the singles line-up and the Vulcans didn't disappoint. Slezak improved to 6-1 on the year in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Halligan at No. 1 singles, and Zukeran cruised on court two as well (6-1, 4-1, ret.). Fillat Perez fell to Colpart at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-2, but the back end of the UHH line-up picked up the slack with straight sets wins. Coney won over Luque 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4, Figlia rolled at No. 5 and
Ryuta Ogawa won a hard-fought match on court six, 6-4, 7-5.
The Vulcan men will get a couple of days off before embarking on four matches in four days, beginning with BYU-Hawaii on Monday in Lihue.
