Seasiders clip Vulcans, again, in men's tennis

LAIE, Hawai`i--It's been like deja vu all over again and again for the Hawai`i Hilo men's tennis team when they take on perennial power BYU-Hawaii.

On Tuesday, for the fourth time in this young season, the Vulcans were edged by the smallest of margins, this time 5-4 to the No. 5 regionally ranked Seasiders. That was the second time UHH has fallen by just one match (5-4), and they have lost twice by the counts of 6-3--and each of those had three set matches that could have gone either way.

BYU-Hawaii, also ranked No. 26 in NCAA Division II rankings, improved to 9-3 on the year, while Hawai`i Hilo fell to 4-6. On Monday, on these same BYUH courts, the Seasiders won, 6-3.

One complete difference from one day to the next was the match at No. 2 singles. On Monday, BYUH's Guillermo Ucelay rolled UHH's Alex Fillat Perez, 6-0, 6-1. Today, Fillat Perez reversed the tables, topping Ucelay 7-5, 3-6, 4-3 (ret.). But the same favor was returned at No. 3 singles, where yesterday UHH's Gregory Zukeran defeated Ibrahim Karmadzha (6-3, 6-3), but today Karmadzha prevailed, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.

Not surprisingly, Slezak Vaclav won easily at No. 1 singles, topping Sterling Galli 6-0, 6-3. The Vulcans also got a singles win on court six from Ryuta Ogawa, a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 5-5 (ret.) victory over Tsu-Ping Kuang.

While the singles matches were split at 3-3, the Seasiders gained the margin of victory by winning two of the three doubles clashes.  BYUH won fairly quickly on courts one and three, with UH Hilo winning a hard fought match on court two. There, Fillat Perez and Bruno Figlia prevailed over Ucelay and Simon Guillin, 9-8 (7-2).

The Vulcans will stay on the north shore to take on Division I Colgate on Wednesday at 11 a.m. on the BYUH courts.
