SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—The men's version of the Hawai`i Hilo tennis program won five of six singles matches and all three doubles contests to cruise to a 8-1 victory over Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon at the Castellucci Tennis Center.
It was the third straight victory for the Vulcans, moving their record to 7-8 on the season. The Seawolves, who were coming off a 5-4 win over No. 45 nationally ranked Holy Names, fell to 1-8 on the year.
UHH's only loss was a three-set battle between
Ryuta Ogawa and SSU's Blaine Mengert, that went to Mengert 5-7, 6-3, 10-4 on court number five. The rest of the matches on the neutral court went the way of the Vulcans in straight sets, or in short doubles contests.
The No. 2 singles match was the closest outside of court five, where UHH's
Alex Fillat Perez, ranked No. 19 in the west region, won a 6-4, 6-4 battle with Alec Wong.
The Vulcans will return to the court tomorrow, taking on Holy Names in a rematch. Start time is 2 pm PDT at Mills College in Oakland. UH Hilo defeated the Hawks earlier this year in Honolulu, 6-3.
