LA MIRADA, Calif.--The UH Hilo men's tennis team opened up the southern California portion of their current road swing with a 7-2 win over future Pacific West Conference member Biola on Wednesday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center.

The Vulcans improved to 8-9 on the year, while the NAIA Eagles, who will move to the PacWest as a provisional member of NCAA Division II next year, are also now 8-9. 

UHH won all three doubles matches and tallied four of the six singles victories to claim the victory.

Vaclav Slezak improved to 13-3 on the year at the No. 1 singles spot, rolling to a 6-2, 6-0 win today. He also teamed with Stefan Coney for a much closer victory on the first doubles court over Lucas Lee and Derek James, 9-7. 

Bruno Figlia and Alex Fillat Perez improved to 12-3 as a doubles tandem on court two, winning 8-4. Figlia, who had two other doubles matches before clicking with Fillat Perez, is 14-3 as a doubles player this year. The Vulcans also won on the third doubles court when Daniel Tada and Dillon Lam prevailed, 8-5. 

Fillat Perez rolled on the No. 2 singles court (6-2, 6-0), as did Figlia at No. 4 (6-1, 6-3). Ryuta Ogawa had a much tougher match at No. 5, outlasting Joe Turnquist, 6-2, 7-5. UHH's only two losses were close ones--on court six, where Lam lost to David Garcia (6-4, 6-4) and on court three where Coney fell to James, 7-5, 6-4.

The Vulcans will have a tougher challenge tomorrow (Thursday) when they travel to Azusa Pacific to take on the No. 11 nationally ranked Cougars. APU is also the second rated team in the west region.
