Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Sharks hand Vulcans first loss, 1-0

KEAAU, Hawai`i—Host Hawai`i Hilo had twice as many shots but visiting Hawai`i Pacific had the one that counted the most during a 1-0 women's soccer non-conference victory on Saturday afternoon in Keaau at Kamehameha School.

It was the first loss of the season for the Vulcans as they fell to 3-1. The Sharks improved to 4-1 on the year. The two teams will meet in October for their Pacific West Conference counter.

The Sharks got on the board at 37:35 in the first half on a play that shared skill and good fortune. Sophomore Ebony Madrid worked a one-on-one situation at the top of the box, leading to a collision between UH Hilo goalkeeper Jenna Hufford and a teammate. Madrid broke free of the scrum and followed the rolling ball into the empty goal, with just a little over seven minutes left in the half.

UH Hilo pressured the Sharks for most of the second half, with the majority of play taking place near the HPU goal. The Vulcans had a number of solid opportunities to score, including on a free kick with just over 16 minutes left that found goalkeeper Lauren Spencer's hands. They had an even better opportunity with 1:30 left on a corner kick, when Lucy Maino rose above the crowd for a solid header, but it went into the grasp of Spencer.

UHH had 11 shots on the day, six of them on goal. The Sharks had six shots, with only three on goal. Spencer picked up her second shutout of the year and also had six saves, and the goal scored for Madrid was her second of 2017.

The Vulcans will now hit the road for three matches in six days to kick off the Pacific West Conference season. The trip will begin with a Thursday (Sept. 21) match-up with California Baptist at 1:30 p.m. in Riverside.
