Vulcans lose heartbreaker to Lancers in 2 OT's

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—There is heartbreak, and then there is shock AND heartbreak. The UH Hilo women's soccer team suffered the latter during a 2-1 double overtime loss to California Baptist on Thursday afternoon at the Lancer Soccer Field.

The Vulcans, taking on a team that is picked to finish second in the Pacific West Conference pre-season poll, were 40 seconds away from walking off the field with a tie and a point in the league standings.

But CBU's Lanai Navarro, as the final seconds were ticking away, took a ball that bounced off a Hilo defender and deposited it into the goal to give the home team a sudden death victory in the conference opener for both teams. The Lancers improved to 3-3 on the season, while the Vulcans moved to 3-2.

Navarro's shot brought a stunning end to a match that surely looked like it would go down as a tie in the books.

Much earlier, it was Hawai`i Hilo's chance to stun the home crowd when Tiera Arakawa scored the first goal of the match at 12:26 in the first half, taking a missed clearance and popping it past CBU keeper Sara Escobedo from the top of the box. It was Arakawa's first goal of the season.

But California Baptist, who is leaving the PacWest to move to the NCAA Division I ranks next season, evened the score at 29:47 when Desarae Felix took Miranda Martinez's pass and shot it past UHH goalkeeper Jenna Hufford. Ten minutes earlier, Felix had sent a penalty kick off the post, but made amends with this tying score. UH Hilo's Leighana Weaver missed just wide left with a shot right before the break, so the score remained 1-1 at intermission.

The Lancers put the pressure on in the second half, outshooting UHH 11-1. Hufford was called on to make a handful of saves and a few other CBU shots went off the post. With just 30 seconds left in regulation, after a Lancer corner kick, another home team shot sailed over the goal, sending the game into its first overtime.

The Vulcans had the first solid opportunity in extra time when Carlee Reader's shot had to be saved by Escobedo. In the second overtime, Kayela Santiago had a one-on-one opportunity but was well covered and her shot sailed wide right. CBU's Felix had another shot to end it but her shot from the right side was saved by Hufford late in the second overtime.

That led to Navarro's game winner, where she took a cross from Rebecca Romero and headed the ball just inside the far post, bringing her teammates streaming on to the field in celebration, 109 minutes and 20 seconds after the match began.

California Baptist played on the offensive most of the second half, giving them an overall 22-10 advantage in shots and a 8-5 edge in shots on goal. The Lancers also had seven corner kicks to UH Hilo's none. Hufford finished with six saves for the Vulcans, while Escobedo had four for the Lancers.

The Vulcans will have a short time to shake this heartbreak off, traveling to Irvine to take on Concordia on Saturday. Start time will be 1:30 p.m., Pacific time.
