RIVERSIDE, Calif.—The scoring machine that is the California Baptist men's soccer team lived up to the hype and more during a 4-0 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Thursday afternoon at the Lancer Soccer Field.
The Lancers, who have now outscored their opponents this year 25-2, improved to 5-0-1 on the season. It was the first Pacific West Conference match of the year for both teams, and the Vulcans fell to 0-4 overall with the loss.
CBU's Aidan Apodaca, who leads NCAA Division I, II and III in scoring, added to his total with his 16
th goal of the young season (yes 16, that is not a typo) to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead 32 minutes into the first half. He is a two-time NCAA Division II national player of the week already this season.
Apodaca wasn't the only Lancer to get into the scoring column obviously. Preston Judd had two goals in the match, and Hugo Gutierrez got the home team on the board first just 15 minutes into the match. The Lancers scored three times in the first half to salt away the outcome early.
CBU, ranked No. 11 nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II poll, outshot the Vulcans 27-6, including 16-3 on goal.
UH Hilo will get a day to rest before taking on another tough opponent in Concordia. Start time for Saturday's match is 4 p.m. Pacific, in Irvine.
