IRVINE, Calif.—Concordia's Keely Abt broke open a scoreless game in the 70
th minute and her Eagles defense made sure that score held up for a 1-0 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday afternoon at the Eagles Field.
With the win, Concordia improved to 3-2-1 on the season and they are now 2-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans dropped their third straight match and second on this southern California trip to fall to 3-3 on the year and to 0-2 in PacWest play.
The match was played virtually even through the first 45+ minutes before the Eagles starting putting offensive pressure on their visitors. After a couple of near misses, Concordia converted on a corner kick, when Abt took the long pass from McKenna Carrillo and headed it in past Vulcan keeper
Jenna Hufford at 69:31.
The best opportunity that UHH had after that came in the 80
th minute when
Kayela Santiago's shot off a corner kick sailed over the top of the bar. With under 30 seconds to play, the Vulcans had a free kick from 30+ yards out but couldn't clear it over the mass of bodies at the top of the box to end the match.
Hufford had six saves in a game defensive effort. When the 90 minutes were said and done, Concordia had outshot UHH 16-10 and 7-4 in shots on goal.
Kaelyn Whitcomb had four saves for the Eagles, who are picked to finish third in the PWC.
UH Hilo will wrap up its southern California road swing with a Tuesday night match at Azusa Pacific.
