AZUSA, Calif.—Two of the top defensive teams in the Pacific West Conference met on Tuesday afternoon at the Cougar Soccer Complex, and a predictable outcome happened.
The Hawai`i Hilo and Azusa Pacific women played 110 scoreless minutes and settled for a 0-0 tie as dusk settled in Azusa. For the Vulcans, they salvaged a point in the conference standings and ended a three-match losing streak, moving to 3-3-1 on the year and to 0-2-1 in the PWC. The Cougars moved to 2-0-1 in the PacWest and to 2-3-1 on the year.
The Vulcans came into the match having given up only six goals in six matches, while the Cougars had allowed only six scores in five outings. Defense, as expected, was the order of the day.
That's not to say that both teams didn't have scoring chances. APU had 20 shots, nine of them on goal, while the Vulcans managed eight shots, with three needing to be saved. Most of UHH's chances came in the second half. The visitors also had five corner kicks to Azusa's three.
As regulation play wound down, both teams made final pushes to get on the board. Hilo's
Jaimie Salas had a one-on-one opportunity that went wide at 78 minutes, and the Cougars' Stephanie Lossau had a similar chance with the same result two minutes later.
In the 83
rd minute, Lossau fired a shot that Vulcans goalkeeper
Jenna Hufford tipped over the top of the goal, and the senior had two more saves before the horn sounded at 90 minutes. Salas also had another shot at 87 that had to be saved by APU keeper Zoey Bauman.
That flurry of activity would slow in the two 10-minute overtime periods. The Vulcans'
Danika Steele fired a shot that was saved in the 95
th minute, Emilie Allum sent one at the UHH goal with 45 seconds left that Hufford gathered in.
Hufford equaled her season high with nine saves, while Bauman had three. Salas had three of UH Hilo's eight shots, while Allum had six of APU's 20 attempts.
The Vulcans will now return home, facing Academy of Art on Saturday at Kamehameha School. Start time is 4:30 p.m.
