Vulcans take out frustrations on Urban Knights, 4-0

KEAAU, Hawai`i—After going three weeks without a win, the Hawaii Hilo women's soccer team took out their frustrations on Academy of Art on Saturday afternoon at Paiea Stadium, blistering the Urban Knights, 4-0.

The long awaited victory gave the Vulcans their first Pacific West Conference win, improving to 1-2-1 in league play and 4-3-1 overall. The Urban Knights remain winless at 0-7-1 and 0-3 in PacWest play.

The Vulcans had gone four matches without a win, dating back to a September 8 victory against Concordia (Ore.).  Since then, three losses by one goal and a tie had put them into frustration mode.

They got started early, just 5:25 after the opening kick. Bryana-Marie Ebbers took a sharp pass from Kayela Santiago, who was on the right side, and put it into the left corner of the net past a diving Morgan Wirz. For Ebbers, the sophomore playing on her prep field at Kamehameha School, it was her third goal of the season, and Santiago's second assist.

In the 12th minute (11:21), Carlee Reader dribbled around and through three AAU defenders and Wirz, for an impressive score.  The score stayed at 2-0 to intermission.

In the second half, Clarissa Guerrero scored her first collegiate goal on a play that saw Sabrina Scott's corner kick bounce off Ebbers header and right to Guerrero, who also headed it in.  Reader put an exclamation point on the night in the 74th minute with her second goal of the evening and third of the season. She took a pass from Jaimie Salas at the top of the box and flicked it into the net.

"We had a lull after the first half after our first two goals," said head coach Gene Okamura. "But I thought we picked up play in the second half. I was really pleased with the players that came off our bench. They kept the pressure on Academy of Art in the second half."

The Vulcans played 24 players in the match, and 11 of them recorded shots.  Overall, UH Hilo outshot the Urban Knights 20-2, including 10-1 in shots on goal. UHH also had six corner kicks to AAU's one. Jenna Hufford had one save on the night in recording the shutout.

The Vulcans will turn around for another conference match at home on Tuesday, hosting Holy Names. Start time is 4:30 p.m.
