Vulcans stun Cavaliers, 4-1

WAIPAHU, Hawai`i—Jamie Salas scored twice, and so did Bryana-Marie Ebbers, leading the Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team into unchartered territory during a 4-1 win over Concordia (Oregon) on Friday afternoon at a neutral site match on Oahu.

The non-conference victory against a perennial soccer power moved UH Hilo's record to 3-0 on the season, the first time in the history of the program (which started in 2006) that they have begun a season with three consecutive victories. The Vulcans best overall start was in 2013 when they charged out of the gates at 4-0-1.

Salas, the junior transfer from Arizona State, scored eight minutes into the match and again at 73:50 to seal the verdict against the Cavaliers. It was her third and fourth goals of the season.

Salas got the Vulcans on the board early after she dribbled in and fired a shot from the left side of the box. On her clincher, she flicked a quick shot from the top of the box past the Concordia keeper.

Earlier, Ebbers took a pass from Carlie Reader and beat Anna Miller to the net to make it 2-0, just shy of 30 minutes into the contest. 2-0 was still the score at the break.

That score didn't sit on the scoreboard long as the Cavaliers pulled to within a goal 38 seconds after intermission on a score by Gabrielle Ewing. But Ebbers gave UHH insurance eight minutes later (53:02) on a breakaway run and shot into the net from the left side.

After Salas' final score, the Vulcans just needed to play defense the rest of the way, and they did. Concordia kept the pressure on, out-shooting UH Hilo 22-10 on the day and 12-7 on goal. UHH goalkeeper Jenna Hufford had a season-high nine saves in notching the win.

The Vulcans (3-0) dealt Concordia just their second loss of the season (2-2). Two days again, the Cavaliers defeated the PacWest's Hawai`i Pacific, 2-1. Their only other loss was to Chico State.

The Cavaliers came with some credentials. They are in just their third year of play at the NCAA Division II level, but were long an NAIA national power before that. They won a national title in 2013 and are working on a streak of 20 consecutive winnings seasons.

Concordia was picked to finish third this year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC), the same conference that houses defending national champion, Western Washington. The Cavaliers were 10-4-3 last year.

The last time the Oregon team had four goals scored against them? In 2007, during a loss to Azusa Pacific.

"That is very good team obviously," head coach Gene Okamura said afterwards. "It's a very good win for us and we are off to a good start, but we have a long ways to go yet and much work to do."

Next up for the Vulcans is their home opener, on Saturday (Sept. 16) against Hawai`i Pacific, set for 2 p.m. at Kamehameha School.
