Wilkinson's two late goals allow Vulcans to slip past Eagles

KEAAU, Hawai`i—Matt Wilkinson scored two goals in the final 16 minutes of the match to help his Hawai`i Hilo soccer team to an improbable 2-1 comeback victory over the visiting Concordia Eagles on Thursday night at Paiea Stadium.

With the win, the Vulcans improved to 2-3 in the Pacific West Conference and to 3-7 overall. Concordia dropped to 2-2 in the PacWest, and the Eagles are 4-7 on the year.

Concordia peppered shots all night at the UH Hilo end of the pitch. In the first half alone, the Eagles had 13 shots, five them saved by UHH keeper Nick Williams, and most of those fit in the difficult category. UH Hilo had just two shots at the break.

In the second half, that trend mostly continued, and the Eagles finally broke through and scored a goal in the 69th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Julian Font received a cross from Jose Garfias that eluded all the defenders in the front of goal, allowing him to pop the ball in the left corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

But the Vulcans began to pick up the pace on the offensive end as well. In the 77th minute, Wilkinson worked a beautiful give-and-go with Tyler Waltjen, taking a left cross at the top of the box and firing it into the top left corner of the net.

Moments later, the Vulcans nearly scored the go-ahead goal on Jorge Martinez' point blank shot at Eagle keeper Mackenzie Hutchins, but he gathered it in to keep the score at 1-1.

The Eagles had two more shots after Wilkinson's goal, but the momentum had shifted. Stunningly, at 88:15, on a free kick, Jack Stonehouse provided the decoy and Wilkinson followed up with a laser shot into the top left corner of the net (again), this time from 25 yards outs.

The Vulcans celebrated momentarily and then for good less than two minutes later.

The goals were the sixth and seventh of the year for Wilkinson, the junior from England, who had to sit out the last Vulcan match after securing five yellow cards. It was the first point (off the assist) in the collegiate career of Waltjen, a freshman who prepped on this same field at Kamehameha School.

Concordia finished with 21 shots in the game, six of them on goal. The Vulcans had nine shots, six on goal. The Eagles had seven corner kicks to UH Hilo's two. Williams had five saves in picking up the win.

The Vulcans will play the second of four straight matches at home on Tuesday night (Oct. 16) against Biola. Start time is 4:30 p.m.
