KEAAU, Hilo—Visiting Biola scored three goals in a span of two and a half minutes early in the second half to break open a tight men's soccer match on Tuesday night at Paiea Stadium, sending the Eagles to a 4-0 victory over Hawai`i Hilo.
Biola's Leo Thompson scored two of those goals during a barrage of scores that helped the Eagles improve to 6-6-1 on the year and to 4-2 in the Pacific West Conference. Hawai`i Hilo fell to 3-8 on the season and to 2-4 in the PacWest.
The match was within reach for the Vulcans at the halftime break, trailing just 1-0 despite the fact that most of the action was spent on the Biola offensive end in the first 45 minutes. The Eagles had eight shots, four of them on goal—and one for a score. Hunter Finnegan scored the first goal of the day in the 38
th minute, taking a leading ball from Kousei Mattox, which was relayed to Jack Macdonald and then sent by Finnegan into the side box.
UH Hilo had just one shot in the first half by
Jorge Martinez, that was saved by Eagle keeper Alex Muir.
The second half deluge began at 51:40 when Thompson dribbled from the left side of the field to the left corner of the goal, and drilled it in from 25 yards out. The goal had barely been announced when Thompson tallied again, this time firing a shot from close range (off a corner kick), retrieved the rebound and pushed it back into the goal at 54:09.
Literally 30 seconds later, Akhibge Unuigbe took a pass from Aaron Hontucan to push the score to 4-0 at 54:39.
The Vulcans, who had won two of their last three matches, had just two shots in the match against a stingy Eagle defense. Biola finished with 21 shots, 10 of them on goal.
The Vulcans will be at home again on Saturday, taking on Hawai`i Pacific. Start time at Kamehameha School is 12:30 p.m.
