Eagles get revenge on Vulcans with four-set win

HILO, Hawai`i—Biola power pack Christina DenBoer had 18 kills, including eight in the decisive fourth set to help lead her Eagle team to a revenge victory over Hawaii Hilo on Friday night at Vulcan Gymnasium.

The Eagles won their eighth straight, improving to 12-2 in the Pacific West Conference and to 16-5 overall. Their last loss? To the Vulcans back on Sept. 20 in La Mirada in five long sets.

UH Hilo fell to 8-3 in the PacWest and to 12-5 overall. Bria Beale and Evelin Solyomvari led the Vulcans with 15 kills each, with Alexandria Parisian one swing back with 14.

The victory allows the Eagles to remain in second place in the PacWest, one match back in the loss column behind Azusa Pacific (11-1). The Vulcans fell into fourth place, one-half game behind Point Loma (9-3).

UH Hilo won the first set (26-24), but as it would turn out for the 411 Vulcan fans, that would be the highlight of the evening.

The home team never trailed in the set, leading 12-7 after a Basia Sauni ace—although the Eagles would come back to tie the set at 24-24 before kills by Solyomvari and Parisian ended the game. Beale had eight kills in the set and scored five of UHH's first eight points.

The second set was tied at 9-9 and was still close at 13-12 before Biola went on a run. They would score six of the next seven points to take the lead for good and even the set score up (25-19).  The visitors would rush out to a 13-7 lead in the pivotal third set, although the Vulcans would crawl back to tie things up at 17-17 on a Teisa Tuioti kill.

The score was tied again at 23-23, and 24-24, but the Eagles won the rubber game on a DenBoer kill, followed by one by Karly Dantuma (26-24).

The fourth set belonged to DenBoer and the Eagles. The 6-foot-1 leaper had many of her eight kills down the stretch when her team needed them most to secure the win.

Dantuma joined DenBoer in double figures with 13 kills. Sami Hover led her team with 21 digs, and the Biola defense combined to post 26 block assists.

The Vulcans, playing without seniors Mina Grant and Kiley Davis, were led on defense by Kaila Lizama's 26 digs and Ashton Jessee's three solo blocks and two block assists. Beale had ten digs to go with her 15 kills. Sauni had three service aces and 25 assists.

The Vulcans will wrap up a six-match homestand on Sunday with a 3 p.m. afternoon match against Concordia.
