Balanced attack leads Vulcans to 3-0 victory over Eagles

HILO, Hawai`i—Two teams that needed a bounce-back match squared off on Sunday afternoon at Vulcan Gymnasium, and it was the home team that got what they wanted.

Hawai`i Hilo helped rid the bad taste of a Friday night loss to Biola with a straight sets win over Concordia, 25-21, 25-18, 25-23 in front of 381 fans. With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 13-5 on the season and to 9-3 in the Pacific West Conference.

Concordia, who came to the islands with a 6-5 mark in the PacWest, dropped all three of their matches to Hawai`i schools and is now 6-8 in conference and 7-15 overall.

The Vulcans wrapped up a six-match homestand with a very efficient and impressive offensive attack. UH Hilo hit .302 on the night as a team, led by middle blocker Ashton Jessee's .692 (10 kills). Bria Beale led the Vulcans with 14 kills (.379 percent), with Alexandria Parisian adding 11 kills (.400 attack success).

The three-set sweep was UH Hilo's ninth of the season, and their second against the Eagles. Concordia, the 2016 PacWest champion, came into the season predicted to finish third in the conference.

The first and third sets were battles that could have gone either way, that the Vulcans managed to come out on top of.

Concordia had a 15-11 lead in the first set before a pair of Beale aces helped the Vulcans draw even. At 17-17, the Vulcans scored three straight points and wouldn't trail again. Parisian had six kills in the set, while Beale had four and a pair of service aces.

The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the second set, but UH Hilo scored five straight points to gain a lead that they wouldn't relinquish in that game. Jessee had five of her kills in the set as the Vulcans hit a sizzling .389.

The third set was mostly Eagles in the beginning. The visitors led at 9-5, at 19-16 and 21-17. But the Vulcans roared back on the serve of Teisa Tuioti, who had two aces during a four-point run. Beale then went back to work, pounding down three balls to give UHH match point, which Parisian finished.

UH Hilo had eight aces in the match, including a career-high four by Tuioti. Beale and Maile Powell had two each. Kaila Lizama had 15 digs, Basia Sauni had 11 and Beale had 10.

Cambria Fernandez led Concordia with 10 kills.

With the win, the Vulcans wrap up a six-match homestand, in which they went 4-2. They now head out on the road for five matches in eight days, beginning with an Oct. 20 bout at Holy Names.
