Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Vulcans shut out Penguins, 2-0

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.—Freshman Jodi Lillie scored her first collegiate goal and senior Jaimie Salas added insurance with another score late as the Hawai`i Hilo Vulcans won a women's soccer road match over Dominican on Monday afternoon at Kennelly Field, 2-0.

The Vulcans improved to 8-4-2 on the year, securing a winning season, and moved to 5-3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Dominican is now 6-7-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the PacWest.

UH Hilo moved into a tie for fourth place with the win, and are now guaranteed (with only two matches left) to post their first winning season since 2014 when they went 7-5-6.

Lillie, a rookie defender from Mililani, scored for the first time as a Vulcan in the 37th minute. She drilled a free kick from far center. That 1-0 Vulcan lead held through halftime after a busy first half, where UH Hilo had nine shots (three on goal) and Dominican had a pair.

It looked like Lillie's goal would stand, even though the action went brisk after the break. The Penguins had seven second half shots during a feisty final 45 minutes. Before it was all said and done, Dominican had 14 fouls and had been issued four yellow cards. The Vulcans had five fouls (no cards).

Salas added the final insurance piece at 85:36. Fellow senior Carlie Reader picked off a pass, pushed it ahead to Salas who was one-on-one with Penguin keeper Alyssa Ramos. Salas won that battle, tallying her fourth goal of the season.

Bailey Cahill, who had five saves in picking up her sixth shutout of the year, had to make her last save of a Penguin shot in the 87th minute to secure the match.

Ironically, UH Hilo improved to 5-0-1 on the year in road matches. The Vulcans will continue this road swing and the season with a Thursday match at Notre Dame de Namur and a Saturday finale at Fresno Pacific.
