BELMONT, Calif.—The Hawai`i Hilo women's soccer team scored a season-high four goals, all in the first half, on their way to an easy 4-0 win over Notre Dame da Namur on Thursday afternoon at Koret Field.
The Vulcans improved to 9-4-2 on the year and to 6-3-1 in the Pacific West Conference. It was their second win of this season-ending road trip, where they will wrap up 2018 on Saturday at Fresno Pacific under the lights at 7 pm Pacific time.
The Argonauts dropped their third straight match to run to 4-13 on the season and to 3-7 in the PacWest.
The Vulcans wasted almost no time in getting on the board in this match in Belmont. Senior
Maleni Avalos scored her second goal of the season just a little over three minutes after kick-off (3:06), taking a pass from
Callye Lahmann outside the box and banging it off the NDNU keeper into the net. It was the third assist of the year for fellow senior Lahmann.
Fourth-year player
Tiera Arakawa added to the lead at 25:11, receiving a pass from
Brende Yoshizumi, taking it down the left side and dropping it into an empty net to make the count 2-0. It was Arakawa's third goal of the year and tenth total point, giving her 27 points in her career—sixth all-time on the Vulcan list.
Eight minutes later,
Carlie Reader joined the scoring parade on a penalty kick to make it 3-0 (33:32). It was the third goal of the year for the senior.
Hedda Bjerklund capped the scoring right before intermission (43:27), taking a cross on a double-assist from Avalos and
Sabrina Scott and firing it under the keeper for a commanding 4-0 lead.
The offense quieted down in the second half, with the damage already done. UH Hilo finished with 14 shots in the match, ten of them on goal. The Argonauts had 15 shots, but only three of them had to be saved by Vulcan keeper
Bailey Cahill, who recorded her seventh shutout of the year.
If the Vulcans can finish with a win on Saturday, they will get to ten wins for the first time since the 2013 UH Hilo team finished 10-4-2. A 7-3-1 mark in the PacWest would be their best since the 2007 squad went 9-3.
