HAYWARD, Calif.—Soccer has been called the "beautiful game", but sometimes it might be the cruelest game of them all.
Despite being outshot 14-5, including 7-2 on goal, host Holy Names etched out a 1-0 win over visiting Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday morning at Pioneer Stadium, on the campus of Cal State East Bay. The win for the Hawks means they improve to 2-1 in the Pacific West Conference and to 3-6-1 on the season. The Vulcans will come home at 1-3 in the PacWest, 2-7 overall.
Ramon Gutierrez hit the match-winner in the 64
th minute (63:37), taking a feed from teammate Edwin Hernandez. That would be all that the Hawks would need, plus some defense and solid keeper work by Alessandro Ramondino, for the win.
Ramondino had seven saves in picking up the shutout. Three times he corralled shots by UHH's
Pedro Werneck and two more came off the foot of
Jack Stonehouse.
In a losing cause, Vulcan goalkeeper
Nick Williams had one save. UH Hilo had three corner kicks to Holy Names' two. There were 16 fouls called on the home team, nine on the Vulcans in the physical match. Two red cards were issued to Holy Names, one to the Vulcans, while UH Hilo had three yellow cards to deal with, Holy Names had one.
After completing their bay area trip at 1-1, the Vulcans will return to the Big Island to host four matches, the first on Thursday (Oct. 11) at Kamehameha School against Concordia (4:30 pm).
