Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Silverswords outgun Vulcans, 114-101

HONOLULU, Hawai`i—Host Chaminade used torrid second half shooting to pull away from visiting Hawai`i Hilo for a 114-101 men's basketball victory on Saturday afternoon at McCabe Gymnasium.

The Silverswords remain unbeaten, improving to 5-0 on the season and to 2-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans moved to 2-3 on the year and to 0-2 in conference play.

Chaminade broke open a 50-50 halftime deadlock with a 13-4 run in the opening moments of the second half (63-54). They would go on to hit 13 of their first 16 second-half points to pull away. There were two ties in the first half, but the Silverswords would never trail in the game.

Chaminade outscored the Vulcans 64-51 after intermission.

The Silverswords shot 64 percent from the field, including 17-of-29 from three-point range. The hosts had six players in double figures, led by Andre Arissol's 21 points.

UH Hilo also had six players in double-figures, paced by Larry Bush with 23. He hit 7-of-9 shots from the field, scoring 13 of his points in the first half. James Griffin had 17, and three players finished with 11—Jalen Thompson, Devin Johnson and Kupaa Harrison, while Cleo Cain added 10.

The Vulcans had some torrid shooting numbers of their own. They shot a season-best 60 percent from the field and nailed 16 of 27 three-point attempts in their effort to match the Silverswords.

Chaminade bolted out of the gates on a 7-0 run and led 9-2 in the opening moments. UHH then added three-pointers by Bush and Harrison cut the margin to 11-9, but Chaminade would take control again and push their lead all the way out to 37-24 with 8:13 to go in the first half.

The Vulcans battled back, mostly from long range. They went on a 19-6 run, tying the game on a  Thompson trey (43-43). They would tie the game again with 18 seconds left in the half on a three-ball from Griffin to make it 50-50 at the half.

UH Hilo had eight three-pointers at the break (8-for-16). Chaminade countered with 63 percent shooting from the field.

Things came unraveled for the Vulcans quickly in the second half. The Silverswords opened with that 13-4 run in the first four minutes as UHH went stone cold. Chaminade, picked to finish fourth in the PacWest Preseason poll, kept the heat on. They hit 13 of their first 16 shots of the second half to turn a tie game into a 23-point lead.

They didn't cool much after that. They built their lead up to 29 points before the Vulcans made a run late in the game to cut it back to 13. Cain had a trio of three's during that blitz.

UH Hilo has a short turnaround, returning home to host Fresno Pacific on Monday night. The game will start at 7:30 p.m. on campus at the UH Hilo Gymnasium.
