Baseball Alum Steering to continue career in Germany

The last college baseball game of Hawai`i Hilo record-breaker Phillip Steering was on Oahu against Hawai`i Pacific on May 13, 2018.

His next baseball game will in April, 2019, somewhere in Germany.

Steering will play for the Hamburg Stealers in a league that will have him playing against the likes of the Cologne Cardinals, the Bremen Dockers and the Berlin Flamingos instead of the Hawaii Pacific Sharks, the Azusa Pacific Cougars and Point Loma Sea Lions. The season runs from April through September, and Steering will depart for Hamburg in March.

The southern California native, who holds the Vulcan school record for home runs in a season (10) and career (18), will play his customary first base and will also catch for the Stealers.

"I am extremely grateful that the Stealers are giving me an opportunity to continue to do what I love," Steering said. "I am eager and excited to travel to foreign places and experience different cultures. To be able to do it while playing baseball is the experience of a lifetime."

Steering hit .421 his junior season and .363 last year. He was a Second Team All-Pacific West Conference selection and a First Team All-Region Academic honoree, carrying a 3.72 grade point average in his major of Business.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity that UH Hilo gave me and how that experience shaped me into the player and person that I am today," Steering added. "I cannot wait to head to Germany and meet my new brothers and start the next chapter of my career."
