ST. GEORGE, Utah—Visiting Hawai`i Hilo had a first half lead on Pacific West Conference leader Dixie State, but the host Trailblazers came to life after intermission going on to a 89-55 win on Saturday night at Burns Arena.
The Trailblazers won their 11
th straight game, moving to 14-2 in the PacWest and to 17-6 overall. They have a 1.5 lead over second-place California Baptist. The Vulcans dropped to 5-9 in the PacWest and to 6-15 on the year.
It was the first of five games in eight days for the Vulcans in the southwest.
Devin Johnson led the Vulcans with 19 points and nine rebounds. He had 12 of those points in the first half.
Cleo Cain added 14 points, ten of those in the first 20 minutes.
Jared Roffler had nine rebounds to help the Vulcans in that category.
It was the Vulcans who put an early scare into the Trailblazers. A 12-2 run by UH Hilo halfway into the half gave the visitors a 22-11 lead, which included six straight points by Johnson. The Vulcans still led 29-20 after a Cain three-pointer with 7:20 left and held a 32-24 margin a few moments later after a
Will Burghardt trey.
An 8-0 Trailblazer run tied the game at 32-32 before a Cain basket and free throws by
Anthony Canencia gave the Vulcans a 36-34 margin at the halftime break--despite giving limited minutes to
Ryley Callaghan (four fouls) and
Randan Berinobis (three fouls).
The game completely changed quickly in the second half. A Brandon Simister three-pointer two minutes in gave the Trailblazers a 41-38 lead and the home team would never trail again. After a Cain basket made it a one-point game (41-40), Dixie State went on a 13-0 run and began to pour it on from there.
The Vulcans had just six points in the first ten minutes of the second half and were outscored during the 20 minutes, 55-19. After hitting 6-of-13 three-pointers in the half way, the Vulcans cooled off in the second half, converting just one of nine.
Simister led the Trailblazers with 20 points, and also became Dixie State's all-time three-point leader with his fourth trey of the night.
UH Hilo will take on Concordia on Monday. Start time will be 7:30 pm PT, and they will face California Baptist on Tuesday.
