HILO, Hawai`i--Stop me if you have heard this one before.
Freshman
Travis Burleson pitched a gem and
Edison Sakata scampered home with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Vulcans a 1-0 win over California Baptist in the final game of a four-game series with the Lancers at Wong Stadium.
The Vulcans and Lancers split the four games, giving UH HIlo a 9-11 overall record and a 5-7 mark in the Pacific West Conference. California Baptist is now 15-7 on the year and 8-4 in league action. CBU won the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, 8-1.
The Lancers won the first game of the series in decisive fashion (10-2), ditto for Saturday's first game (8-1). The other two contests, both Vulcan wins, had abundant similarities.
Tonight, Burleson was in control, pitching six shutout innings and allowing only two hits. He walked one batter, and fanned five. On Friday night, the same could be said for
Kyle Alcorn, who was impressive in setting the table for a 2-1 UHH walk-off win. In both cases, neither pitcher got the win. Both nights the decision went to closer
John Kea, who was the beneficiary of Vulcan heroics in the bottom half of the final inning.
And both nights, the home team scored the winning run on an errant throw. On Friday, it was
Phillip Steering dashing home on a wild pitch.
Tonight in the eighth inning of a seven inning contest, Sakata led off with an infield single.
Dylan Sugimoto followed with a base hit to center field, bringing up
Kyle Yamada. Yamada delivered a single to shallow left field, and in a rush to throw out Sakata at third, the left fielder's throw sailed wide of the base, all the way to the backstop. Sakata hesitated, and then sprinted home with the winning run, drawing his celebrating teammates out of the dugout for the second straight night.
Sugimoto and
Jonathan Segovia had two of UHH's seven hits. The Lancers had just two hits on the night, one in the first inning and another in the sixth off of Burleson, both singles.
The first game was much different.
CBU's Andrew Bash pitched and hit his way to a win. He hit a home run in his first at-bat and then toed the rubber for 8.1 innings of impressive work. He gave up just one run and struck out six, improving to 5-0 on the season. At the plate, he was 2-for-4 with a double and home run.
His counterpart
Drew Ichikawa pitched well until the fifth inning, when the Lancer bats got hot and erupted for five runs. Bash then finished his work on the mound, scattering nine hits but only allowing the one run.Â
Steering had two hits in the game, as did Mana Monogo and
Edwin Stanberry.Â
The Vulcans, who have already surpassed their win total from 2017, will now hit the road for a pair of series at Fresno State (March 24, 26) and Dixie State (March 29-31).
