ST. GEORGE, Utah—Phillip Steering hit a home run in each game and
Travis Burleson found the recipe to finally cool the Dixie State bats as Hawai`i Hilo salvaged a split on Saturday at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Trailblazers won the opener, their third straight in the series, 13-5. The Vulcans bounced back to win the nightcap, 6-3, in the seven inning game. UH Hilo will come back home after two weeks on the road with a 12-16 overall record and an 8-12 mark in the Pacific West Conference. Dixie State is now 15-19 on the year and 11-13 in the PacWest.
Dixie State scored a total of 36 runs in the first three games before Burleson tamed their red-hot bats. The freshman gave up three runs in six innings, allowed six hits, walked two and fanned two. He improved to 2-4 on the season.
John Kea picked up his fourth save of the year by allowing only one base runner in the seventh.
On the offensive side, Steering hit his fourth home run of the year and rookie
Jaryn Kanbara hit a two-run shot during a three-run first inning for the Vulcans. UH Hilo scored three times in the first and once in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Dixie State scored all three of their runs in the first inning, but Burleson settled in after that to nail down the win.
Kyle Yamada and
Jonathan Segovia both went 2-for-4 with two runs scored each. Kanbara and
RJ Romo each drove in a pair of runs, and Steering had the home run and was walked twice.
In the first game, the Trailblazers built a 10-2 lead through just four innings. They hit the ball for sure, but also benefited from a rare rough outing by
Kyle Alcorn. The freshman lefty had a hard time finding the plate, walking six batters before leaving in the second inning.
Dixie State scored at least one run in all but three innings, pounding out 13 hits. But they also took advantage of 14 walks issued by Vulcan pitchers and three errors by the UHH defense.
The Vulcans had 14 hits themselves, including a home run and double by Steering. Kanbara went 3-for-4 in the opening contest, while Yamada, Romo and
Dylan Sugimoto had two hits in the game. Gabe Taylor had three hits for the Trailblazers and drove in five runs. 11 of Dixie's 13 hits were singles.
Next games for the Vulcans will be on Monday-Tuesday April 9-10 against No. 1 nationally ranked Azusa Pacific. Both doubleheaders will start at 4 pm.
