Vulcans take down Sea Lions again, 9-4

HILO, Hawai`i—Host Hawai`i Hilo survived an early Point Loma lead, a 35-minute rain delay and one of the Sea Lions' ace pitchers to take a 9-4 win on Thursday night at Wong Stadium.

The win gives the Vulcans back-to-back victories in the four-game series, and moved them up to .500 at 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the Pacific West Conference. Point Loma falls to 9-10 on the year and to 5-5 in conference play.

The two squads will wrap up the four-game set with a Saturday doubleheader that is scheduled to start at 4 pm.

UH Hilo used a strong pitching performance from Dylan Spain, strong relief work from Cole Nakachi, a three-run outburst in the sixth inning and help in the eighth to secure the win.

Spain had trouble finding the plate early, walking three batters in the first inning. In the second, PLNU pieced together three hits and a pair of runs to take a 2-0 lead. But the tall righthander settled in after that, allowing only one more hit and fanning the final three batters that he faced in the sixth.

His teammates put him in position to get the win with a big rally in the bottom half of the inning. A hit batter and a Jonathan Segovia single set the table for Phillip Steering, who cleaned it with a triple over the centerfielder's head to give UHH a 3-2 lead. The Vulcans added another run when RJ Romo followed with a single up the middle to score Steering (4-2), and the night for PLNU pitcher Trevor Abshire was done. He came into the game with a 2-1 record and 2.01 ERA.

The rain delay came next. When play resumed 35 minutes later the Sea Lions made it a one-run game without a hit. A hit batter and a walk brought reliever Nakachi into the contest. A sacrifice fly made it 4-3, but Nakachi got the final out of the inning set the Sea Lions down 1-2-3 in the eighth.

The Vulcans added a whole lot of insurance in the eighth, working four walks, two hits and a PLNU throwing error to chase five runs across the plate. The Sea Lions loaded the bases with three hits in the ninth and scored a run to account for the final 9-4 tally.

Spain evened his record at 2-2, tossing six innings and giving up two earned runs. He allowed only four hits, struck out six and walked five.  Nakachi went two full innings and did not give up a hit.

Edwin Stanberry and Segovia had two hits to lead the Vulcans on offense.
