Sea Lions salvage series split with twinbill sweep

HILO, Hawai`i—Point Loma used two strong pitching performances and plenty of hitting to salvage a series split with a Saturday doubleheader sweep of Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at Francis Wong Stadium, 14-4 and 6-0.

The Vulcans, who came into the day at .500, dropped to 7-9 overall and to 3-5 in the Pacific West Conference. The Sea Lions improved to 11-10 on the year and to 7-5 in the PacWest. The Vulcans had won on Thursday (6-5) and Friday (9-4) to take the first two games of the series.

Tyler Flores had two home runs on the night for the Sea Lions, Stephen Young  gave up just one run in the first game and Wyatt Shackleford tossed a three-hit shutout in the nightcap.

In the first game, pitchers Brandyn Lee-Lehano (UHH) and Young matched zeros for the first three innings, both giving up just two hits and no runs.

But in the fourth, Lee-Lahano suddenly had trouble finding the strike zone. A single by Darian Sylvester brought home a run and three walks total brought in two more Point Loma counters. Dylan Sugimoto came on in relief, but before the inning was over, Point Loma put four runs on the board with the benefit of just one hit to take a 4-0 lead.

The Sea Lions would add two more runs in the fifth on three hits (6-1) before the Vulcans got on the board in the bottom half of the inning after a Kyle Yamada single and a sacrifice fly by Phillip Steering. PLNU would answer with a home run by Flores, his seventh of the season to make the score, 9-1.

Young, a pre-season All-PacWest pick, left in the seventh after pitching 6.1 innings, allowing six hits and just one run. The Vulcans took advantage, using freshman Jaryn Kanbara's first collegiate home run, a three-run shot, to draw closer at 9-4. Nonetheless, the Sea Lions put the game out of reach in the eighth with five more runs.

Flores, Sylvester and Colby Kaneshiro had three hits each for the Sea Lions, with Flores, Sylvester and John Balliet driving in three runs apiece. Point Loma had 14 hits in the game to UHH's seven. Young got the win for Point Loma, his first of the year (1-2). Yamada had a pair of hits for the Vulcans.

In the second game, the Vulcans couldn't solve 6-foot-4 right-hander Shackleford. He struck out the side in the first inning, and didn't have to dodge too much trouble after that. He gave up a single in the second inning to Sugimoto, an infield hit to RJ Romo in the fifth and a double to Yamada in the sixth.

Meanwhile, Flores hit another bomb over the right field fence, his ninth home run of the year, a three-run shot in the first inning. The Sea Lions would put four runs on the board in the first, another in the second and their sixth run in the fifth, and let Shackleford do the rest.

Shackleford improved to 3-1 with the win and picked up his second shutout of the season. He gave up just three hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out six. Freshman Travis Burleson took the loss for UHH, falling to 1-3.  Flores was 2-for-3 and was Micah Pries. Flores had six RBI on the day and his team had 25 hits.

The Vulcans will play their fifth straight home series next weekend, taking on conference leader California Baptist in four games, Thursday-Saturday.
