KAILUA-KONA, Hawai`i—Senior third baseman
Bailey Gaspar hit a walk-off home run in the first game and
Isabelle Mejia allowed just one run in the second as Hawai`i Hilo gained a doubleheader sweep over Chaminade on Sunday at Kealakehe High School in Kona, 2-1 and 2-1.
It was Gaspar's third walk-off home run of the season and it came fittingly on Senior Day. Hawaii Hilo improved to 25-13 on the season and to 13-7 in the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade fell to 10-30 this year and to 6-22 in conference play.
Gaspar's home wrapped up a tense first game that saw the Vulcans play from behind. The Silverswords scored an unearned run in the fifth inning on Rainelle Matsuoka's RBI-single, but otherwise both pitchers were tossing zeros.
Cyanne Fernandez and Devan Dickson were locked in a pitcher's duel, with both players getting help from their defense. Chaminade's Dickson benefitted from left fielder Kayla Henmi's laser to catcher Kiana Ulufale to throw out Skyler Thomas at home in the third inning and UHH's Fernandez used infield double plays to end the inning in the fifth and sixth.
The game was almost over in the seventh, with Chaminade coming inches away from victory. With the Silverswords leading 1-0, UH Hilo's
Kiarra Lincoln walked to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a passed ball and then to third on fly out. With two outs, Mejia hit a sharp ground ball deep in the hole to shortstop on what could have been the final out of the game, but on a bang-bang play at first Mejia beat the throw that was in the dirt, scoring Lincoln to tie the contest at 1-1.
Fernandez only allowed one hit in the eighth, and put the Silverswords down in order in the ninth. Dickson shut down the Vulcans 1-2-3 in the eighth and got the first out of the ninth, bringing up Gaspar.
With a 1-0 count, Gaspar launched the next pitch she saw to centerfield. It cleared the fence and landed in a mob of her personal friends and family from Honolulu and Vancouver, Wash., who were all sitting together behind the fence. Gaspar trotted around the bases, and her teammates mobbed her when she reached home plate.
Matsuoka had three hits for Chaminade and Ashlyn Yagin had two. Lincoln had two hits for the Vulcans, and Gaspar hit her 11
th home run of the season. Dickson was the hard-luck loser, allowing only five hits. Fernandez picked up her 15
th win of the season (15-5).
In the second game, Mejia gave up just five hits and worked out of trouble in the fifth inning and the seventh to get the win, her fourth of the season (4-5). She didn't walk a batter and fanned three.
Mejia helped herself in the first inning with an RBI-single to score
Mari Kawano, who had walked. In the third inning the Vulcans added another run when
Darian Obara singled and eventually moved to third on a passed ball. Gaspar then brought her home with sacrifice fly to right to make it 2-0.
In the top of the fifth, the Silverswords slapped their second and third hits against Mejia, by Kiana Ulufale and Makena Kealoha. Ulufale worked her way to third base, but was thrown out at home by Gaspar after a ground ball. Mejia induced a ground out to end the inning. In the seventh, Ulufale hit a monster home run over the left field fence to cut the deficit to one, but Kawano made a diving stop at shortstop to end the game.
Matsuoka added another two hits for Chaminade to give her five on the day.
The Vulcans now hit the road to take on Notre Dame de Namur and Academy of Art (April 21-24).
