HONOLULU, Hawai`i—Bailey Gaspar hit a grand slam in the nightcap and
Leah Gonzales didn't give up an earned run in the first game as Hawai`I Hilo Vulcans swept Chaminade on Saturday afternoon at Patsy T. Mink Oahu Regional Park, 7-1 and 10-3.
The games marked the end of the regular season for both teams. The Vulcans will now await Monday morning's NCAA selection show to see if they climbed up the rankings to qualify for the regional tournament. They came into the week at No. 10, with the top eight squads advancing to the post-season.
UH Hilo is now 31-15 on the year and 19-9 in the Pacific West Conference. Chaminade ends their season at 10-33 and 6-25 in conference play.
In the first game, the Vulcans got on the scoreboard early and often and then rode the pitching of Gonzales. In the second game, Gaspar capped her brilliant career with her school-record 15
th home run and her UHH record-tying 54
th RBI.
The visitors scored twice in the first inning of game one, twice in the second and once again in the third to build a 5-0 lead. To open the game,
Kiarra Lincoln doubled and eventually scored on Gaspar's single.
Kacie Freudenberger would later hit a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. In the second,
Maria Steadmon singled, as did Lincoln. A
Mari Kawano bunt moved them both over, and Gaspar picked up another RBI with a sacrifice fly to make the board 4-0.
In the third, three walks helped push a run across the plate to move the score to 5-0, and the Vulcans were fully in control. Gonzales only gave up one hit through the first four innings and had allowed only two hits through five, with no Silversword runners advancing past second base.
UH Hilo added two more runs in the seventh on Steadmon's RBI-single and Kawano's ground out RBI. With a 7-0 lead Gonzales took to the pitching circle one more time and finally ran into trouble but only because her defense failed her a bit with two errors. One Chaminade run crossed before Gonzales got the final out and the win for the Vulcans.
The sophomore righthander earned her eighth win of the season (8-3) and lowered her ERA to 3.16. She gave up just four hits today, no earned runs, walked one and struck out one. Lincoln and Steadmon had two hits each, while Kawano and Gaspar both drove in a pair.
In the second game, Lincoln got things started again, this time with home run to give UHH a 1-0 lead. But the Silverswords scored twice in the bottom half of the inning on three hits, which included a two-run double by Kayla Russell. The Vulcans tied it back up in the top of the third with an unearned run, but then handed it right back to the Silverswords with two errors and an unearned run in the bottom half, giving Chaminade a 3-2 lead.
After working through early trouble, Vulcan senior pitcher
Cyanne Fernandez settled in. She didn't give up an earned run after the first inning and didn't allow any Silverswords to cross the plate after the third. Still, the Vulcans trailed until the fateful fifth.
Down 3-2,
Nikki Corla singled to start the inning and Lincoln followed with a double. Kawano then worked a walk to load the bases, bringing up Gaspar.
During a season in which the dramatic became normal for the senior third baseman, she added another tale to her legendary career. She launched a pitch over the left-centerfield fence for a grand slam, giving UHH a lead (6-3) that they wouldn't relinquish.
Gaspar added another RBI in the sixth on a single, giving her five for the game and 54 for the year. The 54 tied the Vulcan school record, shared with Charity Senas. Gaspar had 53 RBI last year, just one shy of the mark.
UH Hilo added two more insurance runs in the seventh, and Fernandez put the Silverswords down in order in the bottom half.
Fernandez, a senior pitching in her hometown, improved to 16-5 on the year. She pitched seven innings, gave up two earned runs, six hits, walked one and fanned six.
Gaspar had three hits, while two hits each could be attributed to Corla, Lincoln,
Markie Okamoto and
Isabelle Mejia. Lincoln had a double and a home run in the game and also scored three runs. Kiana Ulufale had three hits and three at-bats for the Silverswords.
The NCAA selection show will take place on Monday, early in the morning Hawaii time.
