Saints get revenge on Vulcans in five sets

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—What a difference a week makes if you are a Saint Martin's volleyball player, coach or fan.

Just one week exactly after getting smoked in three sets by Hawai`i Hilo, the Saints turned the tables on the Vulcans with a stunning 25-16, 25-17, 18-25, 19-25, 15-10 win in the nightcap of the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase at San Francisco State.

After winning in five sets earlier today over Cal State Dominguez Hills, the Vulcans head into Saturday's play with a 2-2 record. St. Martin's picked up its first victory of the season to move to 1-3 in 2018.

UHH senior middle blocker Kylie Davis had a career high 13 kills, hitting .423 on the night, and fellow middle Ashton Jessee had 12 kills with a red-hot .500 marksmanship. Evelin Solyomvari added 11 kills for the Vulcans, while Mina Grant led the defense with 26 digs. Bria Beale added 20 digs and setter Basia Sauni had 25 assists, 12 digs and four service aces.

After rolling the Saints in Hilo last week, the Vulcans burst out of the gates again in the first set, taking a 5-1 lead. But SMU scored seven of the next nine points to take a 8-7 lead and they would never trail again in the set. The Saints would go on to hit .464 in the game, cruising to a 25-16 win.

In the second set, the Washington team took an early 5-1 lead and would never be on the short side of the score. The Vulcans would crawl back to 11-10 after a kill by Alexandria Parisian, but SMU would pull away again. They tallied ten of the final 14 points to take the set (25-17).

Backs to the wall, the Vulcans battled back in the third set leading from start to finish. They ran out to a 17-8 lead after a Kaila Lizama ace. A Davis kill would end the set (25-18), with the Vulcans hitting a torrid .457 to stay alive. The fourth set was tighter, with both teams trading leads all the way to a 19-19 deadlock, before the Vulcans scored the final six points of the game including back-to-back aces by Sauni to close the set—and seemingly reclaim the momentum.

But the fifth and deciding set mostly belonged to the Saints. They built a 9-4 lead and the Vulcans would never get closer than three points after that. SMU's Rachel Gondrezick put the finishing touches on the match with a kill and service ace (15-10) to send her teammates streaming to the floor in celebration.

Gondrezick had 16 kills, part of a three-headed attack to lead the Saints. Liliani Kamaka had 19 kills and Megan Vernoy had 17. The Saints worked the Vulcan defense for 11 service aces.

Two matches are on tap Saturday for the Vulcans. They will have a quick turnaround (and hopefully a short memory) when they hit the floor at 10:45 a.m. (Pacific time) to take on host San Francisco State, and will wrap up play in the bay area with a 3:15 p.m. match against Montana State-Billings.
