SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—Less than 12 hours after their most disappointing loss of the young season, the Hawai`i Hilo volleyball team posted perhaps their most impressive win of the first two weeks with a straight set sweep of host San Francisco State.
The Vulcans, who lost to St. Martin's in five sets late Friday night, bounced back in impressive fashion with a victory over the Gators, who came into the match at 4-1. UH Hilo improved to 3-2 on the year with a 25-18, 25-21, 25-23 triumph.
UH Hilo will wrap up play at the D2 West Region Volleyball Challenge at 3:15 p.m. (Pacific) against Montana State Billings. The Yellowjackets are 6-1 on the year, and like the Vulcans, are 2-1 in the tournament.
Sophomore outside hitter
Bria Beale had one of the most productive hitting days in school history, converting her attack attempts at a .737 clip. She had a match-high 15 kills on just 19 swings, with only one hitting error. The school record was set over 25 years ago by Alofa Tagataese at .864--twice.
Evelin Solyomvari added 13 kills for the Vulcans and
Mina Grant had 15 digs. UH Hilo zipped in ten service aces and hit a season-high .353 as a team.
The Vulcans came out with a bit of a hangover in the first set, falling behind 8-3 to the Gators in The Swamp. But they battled back, taking the lead (18-17) on a kill by
Alexandria Parisian. They proceeded to score seven straight points—thanks in part to two kills by Beale, two aces by
Ashton Jessee and the finisher by Parisian (25-18). The Vulcans hit .440 in the first set.
The two teams traded blows in the second set, marked by 15 ties in the game. At 21-21, the Vulcans pulled away by scoring the final four points with a kill by Solyomvari, two aces by
Maile Powell and again the final putaway by Parisian (25-21).
In the third set, UH Hilo broke out to 10-5, 15-10 and 16-13 leads, but the Gators inched back. SFS tied the set at 19-19 and moved out in front, 22-19. The Vulcans then scored the next four points and the set was tied at 23-23. Head coach
Gene Krieger's team then settled matters in straight sets with a Grant kill and a Solyomvari blast (25-23).
Drew Morris had 12 kills and Bailey Johnson had 11 to lead San Francisco State (4-2).
