Vulcans and Silverswords battle to 0-0 tie

HONOLULU, Hawai`i—110 minutes, 26 shots, 11 saves and no score.

Defense ruled the day on Saturday afternoon at St. Louis Field, leading to a double overtime 0-0 tie between Hawai`i Hilo and Chaminade in a Pacific West Conference women's soccer match. It was the conference opener for the Vulcans, who are now 1-1-2 overall. The Silverswords are 0-1-1 in the PacWest and 1-2-1 in 2018.

It was the second straight shutout for Vulcan goalkeeper Bailey Cahill and her defense. The junior transfer (Santa Rosa JC) faced eight shots and had four saves. Her counterpart, Chaminade's Brandee Lane, was busier with seven saves. UH Hilo had 18 shots in the match.

After a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation, the Vulcans had the first crack at a score in the first overtime, when Carlie Reader fired a shot that was saved by Lane. In the second overtime, Chaminade's Randi Flores launched a shot that was saved by Cahill, and moments later Brianne Hernandez sent another shot for the Silverswords that went high.

The Vulcans had the last opportunity when Jaime Salas took a rip that went wide of the goal with just a little over a minute left.

Reader finished with four shots for the Vulcans, all of them on goal. Callye Lahmann had three shots for UH Hilo in regulation.

The Vulcans will return home for a match-up on Tuesday night against Azusa Pacific. The match will begin at 7 p.m., with a ceremony prior to the start to honor former Vulcan player, the late Lindsey Poulsen. Poulsen, who played for UH Hilo from 2010-13, passed away last summer after a battle with ovarian cancer. Her number 22 jersey will be retired at the ceremony.
