Vulcans top Cougars on Lindsey's night, 2-1

KEAUU, Hawai`i—On a night where Hawai`i Hilo retired the #22 jersey of the late Lindsey Poulsen, two goals was just enough to give them two wins on the year, defeating visiting Azusa Pacific, 2-1.

The victory at Paiea Stadium gives the Vulcans their first Pacific West Conference win of the year (1-0-1) and they improved to 2-1-2 on the season. It was the first conference loss for the Cougars (1-1-1), they leave the island 1-5-1 overall.

It was UH Hilo's first-ever victory over Azusa Pacific in women's soccer.

The Vulcans scored in the 15th minute on a nifty give-in-go from Jaimie Salas to Callye Lahmann, and back to Salas. It was the first goal of the season for the senior Salas, and just the third goal of the year for the defensive-minded Vulcans.

UH Hilo had more chances in the first half with eight total shots, including five on goal, while the Cougars had just one attempt that went wide, ending the first half 1-0.

In the second half, the play was fairly even in the early going. The Cougars had a pair of shots on goal, both that were saved by Bailey Cahill.

Then the Vulcans scored a huge insurance goal in the 62nd minute. On a corner kick from Danika Steele, Lahmann went high in the air, popping the ball to her left to a charging Lucy Maino who headed the ball into the net. It was the second assist of the night for Lahmann, and the first goal of the year for Maino.

It turns out that they would need it. The Cougars found paydirt in the 74th minute when Kaylee Nicoll's corner kick landed perfectly off the head of Haley Bostard, who sent the ball past Cahill. It was only the third goal of the year given up the junior keeper, who was named the PacWest Defender of the Week on Monday.

It was the Vulcans who had a couple more opportunities late in the match, managing at best to keep the ball out of the Azusa Pacific end of the field to secure the 2-1 win.

UH Hilo finished with 12 shots on the night, nine of them on goal. APU had six shots, four of them on goal—all in the second half.

Prior to the start of the match, the Vulcans retired the No. 22 jersey of former player Poulsen, who played at UHH from 2010-13. The two-time All-Pac West selection passed away this past summer after a long battle with ovarian cancer.

The Vulcans will return to Kamehameha School on Saturday, hosting Chaminade in a 3 p.m. match.
