HILO, Hawai`i—UH Hilo's
Leighana Weaver and
Tiera Arakawa broke a long goal-less drought against rival Chaminade, helping to lead the Vulcans to a 2-0 win over the Silverswords on Saturday afternoon at Paiea Stadium.
UH Hilo improved to 3-1-2 on the season in the non-conference match, while Chaminade dropped to 1-3-1. The two teams played 110 scoreless minutes last Saturday in Honolulu in a match that counted in the Pacific West Conference standings.
Figuring in last week's match and nearly 42 minutes of scoreless action today, the two teams played 152 minutes without scoring—before Weaver's header off an Arakawa corner kick just before the end of the half put the Vulcans on the board, 1-0.
Arakawa added the clincher in the 54
th minute (53:28) early in the second half.
Carlie Reader cranked a free kick from the right side, that bounced off several bodies and brought Chaminade goalkeeper Brandee Lane out of the box. Arakawa snuck in and pushed the ball into an empty net, making the score 2-0.
It was Arakawa's tenth career goal and Weaver's fourth. Arakawa, who also now has three career assists and 23 points, moved into eighth place on UH Hilo's all-time scoring list. The senior nearly picked up two more points later in the match when her free kick banged hard off the top of the crossbar.
Meanwhile, the Vulcan defense was stellar again. UH Hilo has given up just three total goals in six matches, which also includes two overtime games. Junior goalkeeper
Bailey Cahill has been on the field for every minute, directing the defense. Today, she needed to save just one shot as the Vulcan defense kept the ball in the UH Hilo end of the field for most of the match.
UH Hilo finished with 11 shots in the match (four on goal), while Chaminade had four shots (one on goal).
The Vulcans will have a quick turnaround, first traveling to Washington to take on St. Martin's on a non-conference match on Tuesday (Oct. 2) before trekking to the bay area for PacWest matches against Academy of Art (Oct. 4) and Holy Names (Oct. 6) next week.
