HILO, Hawai`i—Dominican's Luke Raley scored two goals, one early in the first half and another moments into the second half to help the visiting Penguins post a 5-1 win over Hawai`i Hilo on Wednesday night under the lights at George and Marian Hall Memorial Stadium.
The victory got the Penguins into the win column in the Pacific West Conference (1-3-0) and they improved their overall record to 2-7-1. The road victory also snapped a four-match losing skid and produced a season-high in goals scored.
UH Hilo is now 2-6 on the year and 1-2 in the PacWest.
Most of the scoring in the match came in fast and furious bunches, at the beginning of both halves.
The Penguins notched the first goal less than four minutes after the kick-off when Raley scored his sixth goal of the season off a pass from Eddie Silverbush. But the Vulcans countered three minutes later (6:54) when
Henrique Castilho sliced a ball from the right side, through three Penguin defenders and into the left lower corner of the goal.
It was Castilho's first goal of the season.
It wouldn't take too long for Dominican to get the lead back. In the 16
th minute, Colin Gunby picked up the leftovers after two other Penguin shots had been blocked right in front of the goal, flicking the ball into the net to give his team a 2-1 lead.
That margin held into halftime, where Dominican had eight total shots to UH Hilo's four. The Penguins also had four corner kicks to none for the home team.
The scoring resumed for the Penguins out of the break. Raley tallied his seventh goal of the season, taking a cross from Khalil Means three minutes after intermission (48:04). Seven minutes later (55:19), the Penguins added more insurance when Arturo Carrillo Contreras found the back of the net, off a pass from Roberto Garcia to make the score 4-1.
Dominican would add one more score at 76:04 courtesy of Silverbush from Logan Siemers to account for the final tally of 5-1.
The Penguins would finish with 13 shots on the night, eight on goal. The Vulcans had ten shots, five on goal. Dominican goalkeeper Ruben Raygoza had three saves.
The Vulcans will wrap up this three-match home stand on Saturday with a 7 pm match against Fresno Pacific.
