HILO, Hawai`i—Fresno Pacific's Felipe Souza scored on a set piece in overtime, helping to send the visiting Sunbirds to a dramatic 4-3 win over host Hawai`i Hilo on Saturday night at the UHH Field.
Souza's game winner came with 98:46 on the clock, just a minute and 15 seconds away from overtime No. 2. The stunning victory moved FPU's record to 4-7-1 on the year and to 2-2-1 in the Pacific West Conference.
The Vulcans heartbreaking loss means that they are 2-7 overall and 1-3 in conference action. It is UH Hilo's second double overtime loss this season, and their third one-goal loss.
The match, played under the lights on a wet field with intermittent rain, featured 33 shots between the two teams. There were also 26 total fouls, and six yellow cards (five on FPU) in the feisty match.
Jose Vargas got the Sunbirds on the board first at 16:17 with a goal, but the Vulcans countered quickly with a score by
Robert George at 22:16. The match was tied 1-1 at the half, with more fireworks to come.
Andrew Rehedul gave UHH the lead (2-1) just under four minutes into the second half, but the Sunbirds tied it (2-2) on James Hernandez's equalizer. FPU then scored what looked like would be the game winner with just 12 minutes left on the clock (Matheus Henrique), but the Vulcans answered at 77:53 on
Kadon Black's score, off the pass from
Israel Kalili.
Tied at 3-3, the teams headed to another ten minutes of play.
The Sunbirds had three shots in overtime and the Vulcans had two before Souza's winner. One of FPU's shots had to be saved by
Michael Harre at 94:38, but Souza would soon follow up with the shot to end the night.
The Sunbirds, who have never lost to the Vulcans in men's soccer, had 19 shots in the game (10 on goal). UH Hilo sent 14 shots towards the FPU goal, eight of them on target. FPU had the slight edge in corner kicks (9-8). It was the first collegiate goals for UHH's George, Black and Rehedul.
The match was played under protest by UHH, due to FPU using an ineligible player.
UH Hilo will now hit the road for four matches in southern California, beginning with a Saturday (Oct. 26) match at Biola.
