Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second half goal give first place Biola 1-0 win over Vulcans

LA MIRADA, Calif.--Conference-leading Biola used a wall-thick defense to post a 1-0 win over visiting Hawai`i Hilo in women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles improved to 5-0 in Pacific West Conference play with the shutout of the Vulcans. Biola also movecd to 8-3-1 on the season in winning their seventh straight match, while UHH dropped to 2-2-1 in conference play and 3-5-3 on the year.

Biola, who has given up just one goal in their last nine total matches, allowed just six Vulcan shots on the day--and just one on goal. After a 0-0 half, the Eagles got on the board moments into the second half (47:42) on a corner kick. Colie Martin sent the ball in from the corner, where Annmarie Alvarez touched it to Katelyn Penner, who pushed it past Vulcan keeper Bailey Cahill.

That would turn out to be the only score the home team would need. The Vulcan defense was good too, fighting off 18 Biola shots, including nine on goal. Cahill had eight saves in the losing cause. Biola spent a lot of time on the Vulcan defensive end of the field, launching 11 corner kicks to UHH's none.

Biola goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez needed just one save to preserve the shutout, her sixth of the season. Jada Macairan had two of UH Hilo's six shots, and Penner had three of Biola's shots, all on goal.

The Vulcans will continue their four-match road trip in southern California with a Monday night match (5 pm PT) at Azusa Pacific.
