AZUSA, Calif.--110 minutes of soccer equaled a scoreless tie on Monday night between Hawaii Hilo and Azusa Pacific at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The 0-0 deadlock between two defensive minded teams was the fourth such verdict for the Vulcans this season and the second for the Cougars. UH Hilo is now 2-2-2 in the Pacific West Conference and 3-5-4 overall, while APU moves to 2-3-1 in the PacWest and 6-5-2 on the year.Â
Much of the match was spent on the APU offensive end of the field, but the Vulcans closed off the Cougar opportunities time and time again. The home team had a 12-0 shot advantage in the first half, and would only increase that throughout the night.Â
For the evening, APU had 25 shots, seven of them saved by UHH keeper
Bailey Cahill. The Vulcans had just five shots in the 110 minutes, two of them on goal. Both of those shots that had to be saved by Cougar goalkeeper Isabelle Decker were taken by UHH's
Christina Kanellou, including the final shot of the night at 108:17. Kanellou sent that one towards the lower right corner, but Decker saved it to close out the match.
APU had a 11-1 corner kick advantage on the night as well.
While the Vulcans have struggled to find their offense, their defense has been outstanding. In their last seven matches, over 690 minutes, they have given up just two goals. They are 2-2-3 during that stretch.Â
UH Hilo will play the third match of their southern California road trip on Thursday in San Diego at Point Loma. Start time will be 1 pm Pacific.
