AZUSA, Calif.--Whatever their record is, opponents should now know that a
Paul Regrutto coached Hawaii Hilo team is capable of defeating any club at any time. Tonight, at the Cougar Soccer Complex in Azusa, the Goliath was the No. 1 nationally ranked and undefeated Azusa Pacific Cougars.
In 2018, Regrutto's Vulcans opened the season with a 1-0 upset of nationally ranked Western Washington. Tonight, they took the No.1 Cougars to the 100th minute before falling 3-2 on Isaac Bawe's game winner in overtime.Â
The Cougars improved to 13-0 on the year and to 6-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Vulcans are now 3-8 on the year and 2-4 in the PacWest. Next up for the Vulcans is a Thursday match in San Diego against Point Loma.
The Vulcans had the Cougars on the ropes, despite getting outshot on the night 29-8 and 17-4 in shots on goal. UHH goalkeeper
Michael Harre had an outstanding 14 saves, a collegiate high for him and the highest total in the PacWest this season.Â
UH Hilo was just 56 seconds away from keeping the upset dream alive when Bawe's score came at 99:04 to keep the match from going into a second overtime. On a corner kick from Gregoire Diep, Bawe took the ball in a middle of a pack of players and slipped it past Harre to keep the Cougars unbeaten and untied.
Earlier, the match began as most thought it would. David Kwinn scored twice in the first half for APU, in the 12th and 26th minutes to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. But the Vulcans made things interesting with just 10 seconds before halftime when
Devan Yoshimura and
Kadon Black, neither of whom started, worked a point into the books for the Vulcans. Yoshimura grabbed his first goal of the season off the pass from the freshman Black on a counter attack to make it 2-1 at intermission.
In the second half, David had his stone ready when
Jorge Martinez scored for the fourth time this season, taking a pass from
Henrique Castilho on a set piece to tie the match at 2-2. The Cougars had more scoring opportunities before the end of regulation that Harre and the Vulcan defense staved off, sending the match into overtime. Harre also had two more saves in extra time, before Bawe's game winner in front of 348 fans.
The Cougars had a 10-1 edge in corner kicks in winning for the seventh time all-time against the Vulcans (7-0).
