Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

2nd half rush leads Sea Lions past Vulcans

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—Playing one of the top teams in the conference for the third time in a week, the Hawai`i Hilo men's soccer team matched shots with Point Loma but couldn't transfer that effort into goals during a 3-0 loss to the Sea Lions on Thursday afternoon at the PLNU Soccer Field.

Point Loma scored three times in the second half and then held off a couple of solid Vulcan chances to pick up their fifth straight victory. The Sea Lions, second place in the Pacific West Conference, improved to 10-4-1 on the season and to 6-1-1 in league play. The Vulcans fell to 3-9 on the year and to 2-5 in PacWest play.

Already on this southern California trip, the Vulcans took No. 1 nationally ranked Azusa Pacific to overtime before losing 3-2, and they defeated Biola 2-1, who was previously unbeaten in conference play.

David Achaerandio scored twice and had an assist in the win for the high scoring Sea Lions, who were coming off a 9-1 victory over Chaminade. Achaerandio, a senior from Spain, scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season, tops in the PacWest. Tim Siegfried scored the other Sea Lion goal (his sixth), which was assisted by Achaerandio (his fifth of the year).

That all came in the second 45 minutes of the match, after an evenly played first half. In the first stanza, the Vulcans had six shots (two on goal) and the hosts had seven, with one on goal.

In the 58th minute of the second half, Siegfried got Point Loma on the board with an easy touch shot after a cross from Achaerandio got through the Vulcan defense. At 74:58, the Sea Lion duo switched roles, with Siegfried leading Achaerandio with a pass ahead of him that he caught up with and punched in to make it 2-0.

The Vulcans had two excellent looks in the final 15 minutes, both after bullet throw-ins from Gabriel Contreras. Both times, Sea Lion keeper Connor McEwan made solid saves on the insueing shots to keep the shutout in check.

Point Loma added one more score in the 85th minute by Achaerandio to make the score much more lopsided than the match actually was.

McEwan finished with four saves in preserving the clean sheet. The Vulcans had 12 shots overall, while Point Loma had 17, four of them on goal. UH Hilo had six corner kicks to PLNU's five.

The Vulcans will wrap up their four-match road trip with a Saturday match at Concordia in Irvine.
